Is September a Good Time for a "Do Over?"

We all crave new beginnings, fresh starts, and “do overs.”  We celebrate the New Year with resolutions.  We blow out candles and make wishes on our birthdays.  We tell ourselves that this year/month/week will be different and better.  It doesn’t take much for us to draw a line and say to ourselves, “It all starts fresh today.”

And September is no different.  In fact, most of us view September as the beginning of the year.  It started when we were five and we could hardly wait for that first day of school.

For the next 12 or so years of our lives, (the most formative, impressionable years) September has been the beginning of the year.  As we got older and had more life experience maybe we didn’t look forward to that “first day of school,” the way we once did.

In September, our anxieties, fear of the unknown, or fear of failure can struggle with the promise of a fresh start, the excitement of new experiences, and the thrill of potential successes.

This September, think about a time in your life when you looked forward to the promise of a new school year – new friends, new school, new teacher.  What did that feel like?  What were the smells you remember?  How was the air different?  Remember the way your new school clothes felt on your body.

Let that feeling of happy, excited anticipation flow in and around you and give you hope and enthusiasm for any challenges you may be facing.

This September take a few moments each day and re-live that memory.  Use this month to start fresh.  Be easy with yourself and celebrate every small victory and highlight –  just like you did when you were five years old and couldn’t wait for that first day of school.
